CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE ARTIST BASED IN LONDON
Yin Wang is a figurative and portrait artist born in China, and is now based in London.
She primarily creates paintings, and occasionally ventures into sculpture and printmaking. Her artwork explores various aspects of her identity, familial relationships, her connection to her homeland, and her perspective on China from the outside. Furthermore, she imbues her work with significant values, such as the importance of family and love.
Yin is currently studying BA Fine Art at the Art Academy London and she has recently exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition 2023.
As an artist of the Chinese diaspora, my work serves to maintain a connection to my roots. I draw inspiration from ordinary people's lives, social media, and my own memories of China, examining myself, my family, and my motherland through different lenses. Mainly through painting, sometimes sculpture and original printmaking, I explore my personal identity and familial relationships, as well as social reality in contemporary China. More specifically, I challenge preconceived notions, question stereotypes, and encourage discussions about social issues and changes, whilst emphasizing fundamental values such as love and family. People are the eternal subjects of my work, and my art process is all about empathy for my subjects. I strive to offer a unique perspective on Chinese culture and society from the outside, hoping to evoke a nuanced and thoughtful response from viewers from different communities and social groups, inviting them into something both strange and familiar.
My color choices and brushwork are influenced by Chinese traditional ink art, reflecting my cultural heritage. Through the blending of traditional artistic elements and the philosophies of Chinese ink art with contemporary themes and popular Western art mediums like oil, I aim to create a distinctive approach that cultivates an aesthetic and cultural exchange between East and West.
Ultimately, my art is a celebration of cultural diversity, a reflection of my experiences as a member of the Chinese diaspora, a re-emphasis of fundamental values, and an invitation to explore and connect with different perspectives.
