Artist Statement
I am an interdisciplinary artist working across painting, sculpture, and printmaking, with a background in fashion design.
My practice explores the relationship between figuration and abstraction, shaped by my experience of living between cultures. I examine themes of memory, displacement, and the shifting nature of identity, particularly in relation to familial bonds and the quiet emotional weight of loss and longing.
Rooted in painting but extending into other mediums, my work brings together traditional Chinese visual languages—such as ink, calligraphy, and material sensitivity—with contemporary approaches. I am interested in how these elements can be reconfigured to reflect emotional and psychological spaces framed through distance.
Drawing from ordinary lives, fragmented narratives, and cultural memory, my work reflects on the subtle transformations that occur over time—how connections evolve, how meaning shifts, and how the idea of “home” becomes layered and unstable. Through material and colour I create works that invite reflection on the tensions between presence and absence, familiarity and estrangement through a restrained and contemplative approach.
I am currently working on a series of pieces inspired by architectural elements from traditional Chinese gardens, such as moon gates and ornamental see-through windows. I reimagine these forms as conceptual portals—thresholds through which memory, distance, and cultural identity are are gently negotiated. I construct spatial compositions that echo the experience of moving through a garden: fragmented, indirect, and unfolding, reflecting how memory unfolds over time and how relationships are shaped by both separation and connection.
