"The Gaze" draws inspiration from a recurring scene in Chinese social media—family members watching their loved ones depart after the Chinese New Year holiday. These viral footages capture quiet yet profoundly emotional moments, where parents linger for one last look as their children leave their hometowns for work in distant cities. This piece reflects on the largest domestic migration movement that takes place during this time, yet rather than focusing on its scale, it lingers on the intimate, unspoken weight of farewell.
The lone figure in the composition is both watcher and subject, standing at the threshold of presence and absence. The inkwashed forms obscure and reveal, much like the fading nature of memory and the quiet endurance of love across distances. Through this work, I seek to capture the fragility of these parting moments—where time slows, emotions swell, and a simple gaze holds the weight of an entire journey.
