This painting explores themes of distance, memory, and presence through the lens of surveillance and family connections. Inspired by a CCTV still from my grandparents' home in China, it captures the surreal experience of seeing myself on a screen—once an observer from the UK, now a subject within the frame. To highlight the contrast between belonging and transience, I render my surroundings and grandfather in thick oil paint, evoking solidity and permanence. In contrast, my own figure, painted on delicate rice paper, appears ghost-like—both there and not there, a visitor in a familiar space.
