Through the Moon Gate V- Rice paper, Ink, Sand, Copper leaf, Modeling Paste, Tetra Pak Drypoint, and Oil on Canvas, 40 × 30 cm, 2026£750
Through the Moon Gate V&#38;nbsp;is part of an ongoing series inspired by the gates and windows of traditional Chinese gardens. Using rice paper, ink, sand, copper leaf, modelling paste, printmaking, Chinese paint, and oil paint, the work is built through multiple layers of addition, concealment, and revision. Architectural forms become conceptual portals through which memory, perception, and transformation are explored, expressed through visual references to scholar’s rocks, light, plants, and abstracted lines and forms. Traces of earlier stages remain embedded within the surface, suggesting how experiences accumulate, shift, and persist over time.

Through the Moon Gate V is part of an ongoing series inspired by the gates and windows of traditional Chinese gardens. Using rice paper, ink, sand, copper leaf, modelling paste, printmaking, Chinese paint, and oil paint, the work is built through multiple layers of addition, concealment, and revision. This work extends my ongoing painting practice beyond the canvas, carrying familiar colour palettes and motifs into a more intimate, decorative form. The surface becomes a site where abstraction and landscape-like rhythms continue to unfold, transforming into an object meant to be held and opened.

This work reimagines these openings as portals through which memory and cultural heritage can be glimpsed but never fully grasped.The diptych format allows two temporalities to sit side by side. The darker panel suggests the obscured, fragmentary nature of the past, while the lighter panel opens into the shifting clarity of the present. The garden becomes a dreamlike space where past and present can meet, even if only for a moment.

The work consists of two parts. It reflects on the quiet weight of farewell. The top parts depicts the older generation, watching in silence as their loved ones depart — a gaze held in a direction their eyes can no longer follow. The bottom part depicts the younger generation — those who remain after their loved ones depart, eyes searching toward a vanishing point that holds more questions than answers.Together, the two parts explore the silent weight of separation across generations, where memory, longing, and love are carried in the stillness of those left behind.
